Hexagram 15
Modesty
谦 (Qiān)
Earth over Mountain
The image is of a mountain hidden within the earth. A great mountain (representing achievement and strength) does not tower arrogantly but remains within the humble, receptive earth. This is the ultimate symbol of modesty: true greatness that does not need to boast. It is a power that is grounded, unassuming, and therefore all the more effective and enduring.
Key Concepts
The Judgment (彖传)
Unlike other hexagrams that promise success with conditions, Modesty itself is the condition for success. It is not a temporary tactic but a fundamental attitude that ensures positive outcomes. A person who is genuinely modest does not give up when praised or discouraged when criticized; they are centered and can therefore bring their work to a successful and meaningful end ("carries things through to a conclusion").
The Image (象传)
The image inspires the wise person to become an agent of balance. Seeing the world from a humble perspective, they are not attached to excess or deficit. They can clearly see what is out of balance and work to correct it. This involves "reducing" their own ego, pride, or wealth when it is too great, and "augmenting" areas where there is a lack, whether in themselves or in their community. This is the work of creating fairness and equilibrium.
Interpretation & Guidance
When you receive Hexagram 15, it is a powerful call to embrace humility in all aspects of your life. This is not about self-deprecation, but about having an accurate and realistic assessment of yourself and your situation. Ego, pride, and arrogance are your biggest obstacles now. By being modest, you become receptive to advice, open to learning, and able to see the world with greater clarity. This attitude will make you beloved by others and attract success.
Look for areas of imbalance in your life. Are you working too much and resting too little? Are you talking more than you listen? Are you taking more than you give? Modesty empowers you to make these corrections. It is a quiet strength that allows you to finish what you start and to build things that last. Whatever your goal, approaching it with a humble heart is the surest path to success.
The Six Lines (六爻)
Six at the Beginning (初六)
Bottom line - Yin
"A modest superior man may cross the great water. Good fortune."
This is "modesty on top of modesty." Your attitude is consistently humble from the outset. This solid foundation of character gives you the inner strength and moral authority to undertake great and difficult tasks ("cross the great water") successfully.
Six in the Second Place (六二)
Second line - Yin
"Modesty that comes to expression. Perseverance brings good fortune."
Your inner humility is so authentic that it naturally becomes known to others without you having to announce it. This sincere and recognized modesty wins trust and support. Maintaining this path with perseverance will surely lead to good fortune.
Nine in the Third Place (九三)
Third line - Yang
"A superior man of modesty and merit carries things to conclusion. Good fortune."
This is the only strong line in the hexagram, symbolizing hard work and achievement. Despite your great merit and effort, you remain modest. This combination of diligence and humility is what allows you to overcome all obstacles and bring your work to a successful end. This is the engine of the hexagram.
Six in the Fourth Place (六四)
Fourth line - Yin
"Nothing that would not be advantageous for modesty in movement."
This line emphasizes applying modesty actively and dynamically. In all your actions and interactions, expressing humility is the correct and beneficial approach. It is not a passive state but an active choice that smooths your path and prevents you from creating opposition.
Six in the Fifth Place (六五)
Fifth line - Yin
"No boasting of wealth before one's neighbor. It is favorable to attack with force. Nothing that would not be advantageous."
From a position of influence, you act without arrogance or showing off. Because your authority is based on genuine modesty, you can take firm, decisive action ("attack with force") against what is wrong or unjust without it being seen as an ego-driven power play. Your actions are effective and beneficial.
Six at the Top (上六)
Top line - Yin
"Modesty that comes to expression. It is favorable to set armies marching to chastise one's own city and country."
Your reputation for modesty is well-established. Now is the time to use that moral authority for self-correction. You have the standing to identify and correct faults within your own sphere of influence—your "own city and country." This is the highest form of modesty: the willingness to discipline oneself.
Love & Relationships (爱情)
In relationships, Modesty calls for setting aside ego. It's a time for deep listening, acknowledging your own faults, and appreciating your partner's strengths. A relationship built on mutual respect and humility, rather than competition or pride, will be balanced, harmonious, and enduring. This is a very favorable hexagram for building lasting bonds.
Career & Business (事业)
True leadership emerges from humility. Acknowledge the contributions of your team and don't take all the credit. By being modest, you create an environment where others feel valued and are inspired to do their best work. This is a time for steady, diligent effort, not for flashy self-promotion. Your results will speak for themselves.
Health & Wellness (健康)
Health is achieved through balance and moderation. This hexagram advises against extremes in diet, exercise, or lifestyle. Listen to your body's needs with a humble ear. It's also a call to be realistic about your limitations and not to push yourself to the point of injury or burnout out of pride.
Financial Matters (财运)
Modesty in finances means prudent and careful management. Avoid ostentatious displays of wealth. Focus on steady, sustainable growth rather than risky, get-rich-quick schemes. A humble approach to money leads to long-term security. It is about living within your means and creating a balanced financial life.
Personal Growth (个人成长)
This hexagram represents the core of personal development. Growth is impossible when the ego is in control. By practicing modesty, you open yourself to learning, accept constructive criticism, and gain a clear view of your own strengths and weaknesses. It is the foundation upon which all other virtues can be built.
Timing & Advice (时机与建议)
The time is always right for Modesty. It is a universally beneficial strategy. The advice is to look inward, check your pride, and act with humility. Re-evaluate your position and seek balance. Don't push for the spotlight; instead, focus on doing good work diligently. Your success will flow naturally from this grounded state.
