About I Ching

I'm a complete beginner - will learning the 64 hexagrams be too difficult? Do I need any prior knowledge?

No special background knowledge is required. We provide complete explanations for each hexagram, from basic concepts to practical applications. We recommend starting with fundamental concepts like yin-yang and the eight trigrams, then progressing gradually through the hexagrams. Our page is specifically designed for absolute beginners.

There are so many hexagrams - what's the best order to study them?

We recommend this sequence:

①Start with Qian and Kun hexagrams (representing Heaven and Earth)

②Master the eight basic trigrams

③Learn important common hexagrams like Zhun, Meng, Xu, Song

④Gradually complete all 64 hexagrams. Our page follows the traditional order while highlighting key learning priorities.

Do I need to memorize all the hexagram texts and line statements?

Memorization isn't necessary. Focus on understanding the core meanings and life wisdom of each hexagram. We provide modern interpretations and practical life examples to help you grasp the deeper meanings behind the ancient texts. Understanding is more important than memorization.

What makes up a hexagram? How do I read a complete hexagram?

Each hexagram consists of 6 lines, divided into upper trigram (outer) and lower trigram (inner). Each line is either yang (solid line —) or yin (broken line --). We provide detailed structural diagrams and line-by-line explanations for each hexagram, making it easy to master the reading method.
