I Ching 62.2 - Preponderance of the Small, Line 2

Hexagram 62, Line 2

Preponderance of the Small (小过)

Hexagram Symbol

六二:過其祖

The Line Text

六二:過其祖,遇其妣;不及其君,遇其臣。无咎。

He passes by his grandfather and meets his grandmother. He does not reach his ruler but meets his official. No blame.

The Commentary says: "He does not reach his ruler": The official should not be overstepped.

Interpretation

This line beautifully illustrates the core principle of Hexagram 62: acting with appropriate modesty and respecting the proper order of things. The imagery is specific and profound. "Passing the grandfather (祖)" refers to bypassing a more senior, primary, or yang figure. Instead, one "meets the grandmother (妣)," a figure of the same yin nature as the line itself. This signifies finding one's proper place and connecting with those who are one's true peers or counterparts. Similarly, "not reaching the ruler (君)" means refraining from overstepping one's bounds to approach the highest authority. Instead, one "meets the official (臣)," the appropriate intermediary. This is not a failure but a success in humility and propriety. By not overreaching, one finds the correct and harmonious way to proceed. The judgment "No blame" confirms that this modest, indirect approach is precisely the right course of action in a time when small, careful steps are paramount. It is wisdom to know one's place and to work effectively within the established structure.

Guidance for Action

Your current situation calls for humility and a respect for protocol. Do not try to bypass the established chain of command or go straight to the top for answers or approval. Your success lies in working through the proper channels and collaborating with your peers and immediate superiors. Seek support and build alliances with those at your own level or the level immediately accessible to you. Trying to make a grand impression on the highest authorities will likely be seen as presumptuous and counterproductive. Instead, focus on being a reliable, respectful, and effective player within your designated sphere. By honouring the existing structure, you avoid conflict and position yourself correctly for steady, blame-free progress.

For Love & Relationships

In relationships, this line advises against grand, dramatic gestures or trying to force a connection with someone who feels out of your league or emotionally unavailable (the "ruler"). Instead, true connection will be found with an equal, a peer who meets you where you are (the "grandmother" or "official"). It suggests seeking harmony and common ground rather than chasing an idealized or powerful figure. If you are in a relationship, this is a time to focus on the daily, practical aspects of your partnership and connect through shared values and mutual respect. Avoid power struggles or trying to "win" an argument. The path to intimacy now is through gentle, receptive, and equal exchange.

For Career & Business

This line is a direct instruction on workplace etiquette. Do not bypass your direct manager to pitch an idea to the CEO. Do not ignore your team lead to get attention from the department head. Your task is to work diligently within your role and collaborate effectively with your immediate colleagues and superiors (the "officials"). Your value will be recognized through your reliability and respect for the team structure, not by being a maverick. Build strong horizontal relationships and trust the process. By following the proper channels, you demonstrate maturity and strategic wisdom, which will ultimately serve your career better than any attempt to leapfrog the hierarchy.

For Financial Matters

In financial matters, this line warns against trying to make a huge, speculative leap. Do not chase high-risk, high-reward ventures that you don't fully understand (trying to reach the "ruler"). Instead, follow a more conservative and established path. This could mean working with a qualified financial advisor (the "official") rather than acting on a hot tip from an unverified source. Focus on steady, incremental growth and proven investment strategies. Stick to your budget and manage your resources meticulously. The path to financial security now is not through a single, brilliant move, but through consistent, prudent, and well-grounded decisions.
