Interpretation
This first line of Hexagram 61, Inner Truth, establishes the fundamental principle upon which all genuine influence is built: self-sincerity. The line is strong (yang) and at the very beginning, signifying the initial, crucial step. The character 虞 (yú) means to be prepared, to anticipate, or to be settled and at ease with oneself. This is not a preparation of outward strategy, but an inner alignment. The good fortune (吉, jí) arises directly from this state of being grounded in one's own truth, free from ulterior motives. The warning, "If there are other intentions, there is no peace (有它不燕)," is stark. "Other intentions" refers to any hidden agenda, manipulative thought, or attachment to a specific outcome that deviates from pure, simple sincerity. When the mind is divided by such calculations, inner tranquility (燕, yàn) is lost. The commentary confirms this, stating that the auspiciousness comes because "the will has not yet changed"—the original, uncorrupted intention remains pure. This line teaches that before one can hope to influence the world, one must first be in a state of honest accord with oneself.
Guidance for Action
Your current situation calls for a period of inward focus and self-assessment. Before taking action or trying to influence others, ensure your own heart and mind are in order. Clarify your intentions. Are they pure and straightforward? Or are you harboring hidden expectations, anxieties, or a desire to manipulate the outcome? Be radically honest with yourself. The path to good fortune lies not in clever planning but in cultivating a state of inner calm and integrity. Resist the urge to rush or force things. Instead, find your center and be at peace with yourself and your core principles. This inner stability is your greatest asset right now; from it, all correct actions will naturally flow.
For Love & Relationships
In matters of love and relationships, this line advises you to focus on your own inner state before seeking connection or trying to fix an existing issue. True attraction and deep connection are born from authenticity. If you are entering a new relationship, be yourself without pretense. If you are in an established partnership, examine your own motives and contributions. Are you acting from a place of love and sincerity, or from fear, insecurity, or a desire to control your partner? Any motive other than genuine care will create unease and distrust. The "good fortune" promised is the peace that comes from being secure in who you are, which in turn makes you a stable and attractive partner.
For Career & Business
At the start of a new project, job, or business venture, this line is a powerful reminder to ground yourself in your core mission and values. Success will not come from cunning tactics or chasing trends, but from a foundation of absolute integrity. Ensure that your goals are clear and your intentions are honorable. If you find yourself plotting, worrying excessively about competitors, or considering shortcuts, you are creating "other intentions" that will lead to anxiety and instability. Build trust with colleagues, clients, and partners by being reliable and transparent. Your most valuable preparation is to be clear on your "why." When your will is pure and unchanged by expediency, you create the conditions for lasting success.
For Financial Matters
When making financial decisions, this line cautions against acting from a place of greed, fear, or envy. These are the "other intentions" that lead to inner turmoil and poor judgment. Before making an investment or a significant purchase, take time to quiet your mind and assess the situation from a place of calm clarity. Are you being influenced by market hype or the fear of missing out? The "good fortune" comes from being prepared (虞, yú), which means doing your research, understanding your own financial situation and risk tolerance, and acting in alignment with your long-term goals. Avoid speculative gambles and get-rich-quick schemes. A steady, well-considered approach based on your own truth will bring you peace and financial stability.
