Hexagram Symbol

The Line Text

九二: 巽在床下,用史巫紛若,吉,无咎。

Nine in the second place: Penetrating under the bed. One must use priests and magicians in great number. Good fortune. No blame.

The Commentary says: The good fortune of the seeming confusion comes from having attained the middle way.

Interpretation

This line points to a situation where the source of a problem is not immediately visible. It is hidden, like something lurking "under the bed." This represents subconscious fears, hidden motives in others, suppressed anxieties, or secret undermining influences. Because the issue is obscure and not purely rational, a purely rational approach is insufficient. The advice to use "priests and magicians in great number" is symbolic. "Priests" or historians (史) represent rational investigation, research, and analysis of facts and precedents. "Magicians" or shamans (巫) represent intuition, spiritual insight, and attending to the non-rational, emotional, and symbolic aspects of the situation. The phrase "in great number" (紛若), which can also mean "confusedly," suggests that this deep investigation may seem chaotic or excessive, but it is precisely this thorough, multi-faceted approach that is required. By employing both logic and intuition to penetrate the darkness and expose what is hidden, you will achieve good fortune and be free from blame. The commentary notes that this success comes from finding the "middle way," not in the sense of compromise, but by correctly balancing and integrating these different modes of understanding to get to the heart of the matter.

Guidance for Action

Trust your feeling that something is amiss, even if you cannot yet prove it. The problem you face is not out in the open; it lies in the shadows of the subconscious, in hidden agendas, or in unacknowledged history. To resolve this, you must become a detective of both the seen and the unseen worlds. Do your homework (the "priest"): gather facts, research the background, analyze the data, and seek expert advice. Simultaneously, you must trust your intuition (the "magician"): pay attention to dreams, meditate on the issue, listen to your gut feelings, and be aware of subtle emotional currents. This dual approach may feel messy and complex, but it is the only way to bring the hidden issue into the light. Do not shy away from this deep dive. A thorough and penetrating investigation is your path to clarity, success, and peace of mind.

For Love & Relationships

In your relationship, there is a hidden current of anxiety or an unresolved issue that is not being spoken about openly. It could be a past hurt, a secret fear, or a subconscious pattern of behavior from one or both partners that is subtly undermining your connection. A simple, superficial conversation will not be enough to fix it. You must gently but persistently look "under the bed." This means using both rational communication ("priest"): discussing your histories, clarifying past events, and speaking logically about your needs. It also requires intuitive connection ("magician"): paying close attention to body language, trusting your gut feelings about what is unsaid, and creating a safe space for vulnerable emotions to surface. This process might stir up confusing feelings, but it is necessary to build a foundation of true trust and intimacy, leading to good fortune for the relationship.

For Career & Business

You are sensing an underlying problem at work that is not being officially acknowledged. It could be hidden office politics, a fundamental flaw in a project's strategy, simmering resentment within the team, or a competitor's secret maneuver. To navigate this successfully, you cannot rely on official reports alone. You must investigate on two levels. Act as the "priest": analyze the numbers, review project histories, read all the documentation, and talk to experienced colleagues for a factual perspective. At the same time, act as the "magician": trust your intuition, listen to the office grapevine, observe team dynamics in informal settings, and try to understand the unspoken motivations of key players. This comprehensive intelligence gathering, though it may seem complex, will give you a complete picture, allowing you to address the root cause of the problem effectively and earn respect.

For Financial Matters

There is a hidden issue affecting your financial health. It is not something obvious on your bank statement, but a deeper, underlying problem. This could be a subconscious belief about money that leads to self-sabotage, a complex investment with hidden fees and risks, or a recurring expense you've failed to notice. To correct this, you must apply rigorous scrutiny. As the "priest," you must meticulously audit your accounts, read the fine print on all contracts, and perhaps consult a financial advisor for an objective analysis. As the "magician," you must reflect on your personal relationship with money. Examine your spending habits, your financial fears, and your deep-seated attitudes toward wealth and scarcity. By combining this detailed, factual review with deep psychological and intuitive insight, you will uncover the hidden drain or block, correct it, and secure your financial well-being.
