Hexagram 49, Line 1
Revolution (革)
初九
The Line Text
初九,鞏用黃牛之革。
Nine at the beginning: Bound fast with the hide of a yellow ox.
The Commentary says: "Bound fast with the hide of a yellow ox" means that one should not yet undertake anything.
Interpretation
This line, at the very bottom of the Hexagram of Revolution, signifies the initial stirrings of a desire for fundamental change. The energy is present (a yang line), but the position is too low and the timing is premature. The image of being "bound fast with the hide of a yellow ox" is a powerful metaphor for necessary restraint. The ox is a symbol of docile strength and endurance, while yellow is the color of the center, representing moderation, correctness, and the middle way. The hide is tough and binding. Therefore, the impulse for revolution must be firmly restrained by patience, moderation, and steadfastness. To act now would be rash and counterproductive, leading to certain failure. This is a time for holding back, consolidating one's position, and gathering strength, not for overt action. The desire for change is valid, but it must be tempered until the conditions are right.
Guidance for Action
You may feel a powerful urge to initiate a major change in your life, but the time is not yet right. Any attempt to force a revolution now will be met with insurmountable resistance. Your primary task is to practice restraint and patience. Do not make any sudden moves. Instead, focus on strengthening your current position and building a solid foundation. Be like the yellow ox: strong, reliable, and moderate. Bide your time, gather your resources, and wait for a more opportune moment. Impulsive action will lead to regret; disciplined inaction will prepare the way for future success.
For Love & Relationships
In your relationship, there is a strong feeling that a radical change is needed. This might manifest as a desire to end the relationship, force a commitment, or drastically change the dynamic. This line warns you to hold back on any such revolutionary actions. The timing is wrong. Pushing for a major change now will likely cause more harm and could backfire. Instead, the focus should be on strengthening the existing foundations of the relationship through patience, loyalty, and gentle persistence (the qualities of the yellow ox). Address minor issues, but avoid ultimatums or drastic decisions until the situation has matured.
For Career & Business
You may be deeply dissatisfied with your current job or business situation, feeling a strong impulse to quit, launch a major new project, or overhaul the entire structure. This line serves as a clear stop sign. It is too early to act on these revolutionary ideas. You lack the necessary support, influence, or resources to succeed right now. Instead of making a dramatic move, bind yourself to your current duties. Be a reliable and steadfast contributor. Use this time to consolidate your skills, build your reputation, and quietly plan for the future. Premature action will undermine your position; patient preparation will build it.
For Financial Matters
This is a time for extreme caution and conservatism in your financial affairs. You may be tempted by a radical investment or feel an urge to completely change your financial strategy. The advice is to resist these impulses firmly. "Bind" your capital securely. Avoid all speculative ventures, high-risk investments, or taking on significant new debt. Stick to safe, proven, and moderate financial instruments. The goal now is capital preservation and stability, not aggressive growth. Hold fast to what you have and wait for a clearer, more favorable time to make significant changes.
