Hexagram 44, Line 3
Coming to Meet (姤)
臀无肤
The Line Text
臀无肤,其行次且。厉,无大咎。
There is no skin on the buttocks; one's movement is hesitant and difficult. There is danger, but no great blame.
The Commentary says: "One's movement is hesitant and difficult" because in moving forward, one is not yet being dragged along.
Interpretation
This line presents a vivid and uncomfortable image: "no skin on the buttocks." This symbolizes a state of extreme restlessness, unease, and an inability to find a stable, comfortable position. You cannot sit still, yet moving forward is awkward and painful, like hobbling. This line finds itself in a precarious position within the hexagram. As a yang line, it should be strong and decisive, but it is dangerously close to the seductive and potentially corrupting influence represented by the single yin line at the beginning. There is a powerful internal conflict: a desire to move forward and maintain integrity, warring with a pull towards an unhealthy or distracting encounter. This inner turmoil results in indecisive, hesitant action ("其行次且"). The situation is indeed dangerous ("厉") because acting from this conflicted state could lead to a serious mistake. However, the saving grace is "no great blame" ("无大咎"). This is because you are aware of the danger. Your hesitation and discomfort are signs that your inner conscience is resisting the temptation. As the commentary notes, you are not yet being "dragged along" by the negative influence. The struggle itself, your very inability to act smoothly, is what prevents a major downfall.
Guidance for Action
Your current situation is deeply uncomfortable and fraught with indecision. You feel restless and unable to settle, yet every attempt to move forward feels awkward and wrong. This is a critical warning sign from your intuition. The correct course of action is to stop trying to force a decision or movement. Do not engage with the person or situation that is the source of this distraction and temptation. The "hobbling walk" is a signal to stand still. You must create distance from the alluring but problematic influence. Trying to resolve the situation head-on or giving in to the temptation will lead to trouble. Your hesitation is your shield. Acknowledge the danger, accept the temporary discomfort, and wait patiently. By refusing to be drawn in, you avoid a significant error, even if it leaves you feeling stuck and uneasy in the short term.
For Love & Relationships
In matters of love and relationships, this line points to a powerful but unhealthy attraction. You may be tempted by someone who is not good for you, or find yourself in a dynamic that feels exciting but is fundamentally destabilizing. This could be an affair, a connection with a toxic person, or being drawn back to an ex. The feeling of "no skin on the buttocks" is the anxiety and inner conflict this creates. You can't fully commit to the person, but you can't seem to let them go either, leaving you in a state of painful indecision. The guidance is unequivocal: do not proceed. Do not pursue this connection. Your hesitation is a sign that you know, on a deep level, that this path leads to pain. The "danger" is real, but you can avoid "great blame" by pulling back now. Create space and disconnect, even if it feels difficult.
For Career & Business
In a professional context, this line warns of a tempting but flawed opportunity. This might be a job offer that seems too good to be true, a shortcut on a project, involvement in questionable office politics, or a business deal with an untrustworthy partner. You feel an internal pull to engage, but something holds you back, making you indecisive and unable to act with confidence. Your work may feel stagnant or awkward as a result. Heed this internal resistance. Do not sign the contract, do not take the shortcut, and do not get involved in the drama. Your inability to move forward smoothly is a protective mechanism. Step back from the situation and refuse to be pressured into a decision. By waiting and resisting the temptation, you will avoid a significant career misstep.
For Financial Matters
This line is a strong warning against a tempting financial move. You are likely considering a speculative investment, a get-rich-quick scheme, or a major purchase that is driven more by impulse than by sound judgment. The idea is alluring, but it fills you with a sense of unease and anxiety—the financial equivalent of not being able to sit still. You feel a pressure to act, but every time you get close, you hesitate. This hesitation will save you. Do not make the investment. Do not enter into the risky venture. Put the brakes on any impulsive spending. The danger of significant financial loss is very real. The way to avoid "great blame" (a major loss) is to heed your own discomfort and do nothing. Hold your position and let this "opportunity" pass.
