Deliverance (解)

Hexagram Symbol

六三

The Line Text

六三,負且乘,致寇至。貞吝。

The third line, yin: Carrying a burden and riding in a carriage, one invites the arrival of robbers. To persist would be humiliating.

The Commentary says: To carry a burden while riding in a carriage is indeed shameful. One brings on the attack oneself; who else is there to blame?

Interpretation

This line presents a powerful and cautionary image of incongruity and pretense. The person depicted is trying to do two contradictory things at once: "carrying a burden," which signifies the status of a common laborer on foot, and "riding in a carriage," the privilege of a nobleman. This is a metaphor for someone who has come into a position of comfort or authority illegitimately, or who is acting with an arrogance that doesn't match their true substance. They are putting on airs, displaying a status they have not earned or are not suited for. This inauthentic display makes them a target. Just as a commoner in a fine carriage would attract the attention of bandits, this behavior attracts misfortune, envy, and opportunists ("robbers"). The situation is inherently unstable and shameful because it is built on pretense. The commentary emphasizes that this trouble is self-inflicted; by acting inappropriately, one creates the very conditions for one's own downfall. Blaming external forces would be a delusion.

Guidance for Action

This line is a strong warning against inauthenticity and overstepping your bounds. It is a time for profound self-assessment. Are you presenting yourself honestly? Have you taken on a role, a responsibility, or a lifestyle that you are not truly equipped to handle? Drop the pretense. Humility is your greatest asset right now. Focus on substance over appearance. If you have been promoted or have gained some new advantage, do not become arrogant. Instead, work diligently to grow into the position. Do not take credit that is not yours. By acting in a way that is grounded, humble, and authentic, you will no longer be a target for the "robbers" of misfortune, envy, or sabotage. Acknowledge your true position and capabilities, and act from that place of integrity.

For Love & Relationships

In the context of love and relationships, this line points to a dangerous lack of authenticity. It could mean you or a partner is "putting on a show"—pretending to be wealthier, more sophisticated, or more emotionally available than you actually are. This false front might attract someone, but it will be for the wrong reasons, and the relationship will be built on a lie, inviting crisis ("robbers"). It can also describe someone trying to be in a new relationship ("riding in the carriage") while still carrying baggage from an old one ("the burden"). This duplicity will inevitably lead to conflict and heartbreak. The guidance is to be radically honest with yourself and with potential or current partners. True connection can only be built on a foundation of authenticity.

For Career & Business

In a career setting, this line warns against "imposter syndrome" coupled with arrogance. It describes someone who has attained a position they may not be qualified for and is now acting the part with undue confidence, rather than working to learn the ropes. They are "riding in the carriage" of the job title but are not truly capable of steering it. This behavior invites challenges to their authority, sabotage from resentful colleagues ("robbers"), and eventual exposure of their incompetence. The advice is to be humble. If you are in a new role, admit what you don't know and seek guidance. Focus on developing genuine competence, not just projecting an image of authority. Do not take credit for the work of others. True leadership is earned through substance, not just claimed through status.

For Financial Matters

This line is a classic warning against living beyond your means or displaying wealth you do not possess. You might be "riding in the carriage" of luxury goods, expensive trips, and a high-flying lifestyle, all while "carrying the burden" of massive debt or financial instability. This ostentatious display makes you a target for bad deals, scams, or simply the harsh reality of financial collapse ("robbers arrive"). It is a call to align your spending with your actual income. Create a realistic budget, shed the need to impress others with material possessions, and focus on building genuine, sustainable wealth. The shame and humiliation of financial ruin brought on by pretense can be avoided by embracing financial honesty and discipline now.
