Interpretation

This line marks the very beginning of the encounter with Obstruction. You are at the foot of the mountain of difficulty, with the dangerous abyss behind you. The natural impulse may be to push forward and tackle the problem head-on. However, this line gives a clear and unequivocal warning: advancing now will only lead to greater trouble and entanglement. The path forward is blocked. The wise course of action is to recognize the obstacle for what it is and not waste energy in a futile attempt to overcome it by force. "To turn back means praise" does not necessarily mean giving up entirely, but rather a strategic retreat. It signifies pausing, withdrawing from the immediate confrontation, and returning to a position of safety and stability. This act of prudence and self-control is what earns "praise"—it is recognized as a sign of wisdom and good judgment. You see the danger and choose not to walk into it.

Guidance for Action

Halt your advance immediately. This is not the time to be bold, aggressive, or to force an issue. Any attempt to push your agenda forward will be met with firm resistance and likely result in failure or loss. The most intelligent and effective action you can take right now is to pause, take a step back, and wait. Use this time to reassess the situation, gather more information, and conserve your resources. Do not view this as a setback, but as a crucial strategic maneuver. By choosing not to engage in a losing battle, you demonstrate wisdom and preserve your strength for a more opportune moment. Patience is your greatest asset now.

For Love & Relationships

If you are considering taking a new step in a relationship—such as confessing feelings, pushing for commitment, or initiating a difficult conversation—this line is a strong signal to wait. Pushing forward now will likely be met with rejection, misunderstanding, or create more distance between you. The other person may not be ready, or the timing is simply wrong. The "praise" comes from showing restraint and respect for the situation's natural pace. Take a step back, give your partner (or potential partner) space, and focus on your own well-being. Your patience and lack of pressure will be appreciated and will create a better foundation for the future when the obstacles have cleared.

For Career & Business

You are facing a significant obstacle in your professional life. This could be a project that has stalled, a promotion that seems out of reach, or a difficult negotiation. Your instinct might be to work harder or push your proposal more aggressively, but this line advises against it. Forcing the issue will only lead to frustration and failure. The best strategy is to halt your current approach. Table the project, delay the conversation about the promotion, and step back from the negotiation. This prudent pause will be seen as professional and wise. Use this time to refine your strategy, build alliances, or simply wait for external conditions to become more favorable.

For Financial Matters

This is a clear warning against moving forward with any new financial venture, investment, or significant purchase. The conditions are not favorable, and proceeding now is highly likely to result in a loss. If you are considering an investment, do not make it. If you are about to make a large expenditure, postpone it. The wise action ("returning brings praise") is to retreat to a position of financial safety. Conserve your capital, hold onto your cash, and avoid taking on new risks. Patience and caution now will protect your resources and you will be grateful later for having avoided a financial pitfall. Wait for a much clearer and more secure opportunity to present itself.
