The Commentary says: The superior person is on a journey; it is right that he does not eat.

Interpretation

This line marks the very beginning of a period of adversity. The image is of a bird (a symbol of light and freedom) that senses the approaching darkness and attempts to fly away. However, it cannot soar high; it must "let its wings droop," flying low and inconspicuously to avoid being targeted. This represents a strategic and necessary retreat from a worsening situation. The "superior person" understands the danger and embarks on a "journey" of withdrawal. This journey is not easy; it requires sacrifice, symbolized by "three days without eating." This signifies a period of forgoing comfort, recognition, or immediate gratification in order to uphold one's principles and ensure long-term safety. Despite this principled withdrawal, one is likely to face misunderstanding or criticism, as "the host has words." Others may not see the danger you see and may gossip about or question your actions. The key is to hold fast to your convictions, knowing that this difficult retreat is the right and necessary course of action.

Guidance for Action

You are at the onset of a difficult or toxic situation. Your intuition is correct, and now is the time for a strategic withdrawal, not a confrontation. Do not try to display your talents or fight for your position openly. Instead, you must be discreet and keep a low profile, like a bird flying low with drooping wings. Be prepared for this retreat to involve personal sacrifice. You may need to give up certain comforts, ambitions, or social validation for a time. Do not be swayed by the opinions or criticisms of others who do not understand your motives. Their "words" are irrelevant to your need for self-preservation. Your focus should be on moving away from the source of the "darkness" to protect your integrity and well-being. Trust your judgment and stick to your principles, even when it is the harder path.

For Love & Relationships

This line indicates the early signs that a relationship is becoming unhealthy, oppressive, or toxic. The light of love is dimming. The wise course of action is to begin emotionally and perhaps physically distancing yourself. This is not a time for dramatic confrontations but for a quiet, deliberate withdrawal. This process will be painful, akin to "three days without eating," as you forgo the comfort and familiarity of the connection. Friends, family, or even your partner may criticize your withdrawal, not understanding the subtle but serious nature of the problem ("the host has words"). Your priority is to protect your emotional well-being. By "drooping your wings," you are choosing self-preservation over a draining and darkening situation.

For Career & Business

In a professional context, this line suggests you are aware that your work environment, a specific project, or your relationship with superiors is turning negative. The situation is becoming untenable, unethical, or stifling. The advice is not to be a hero or a whistleblower at this stage. Instead, plan your exit strategy quietly. Keep your head down, do your job without drawing attention ("let your wings droop"), and start looking for a new position. This may require you to forgo a potential promotion or bonus ("three days without eating"). Colleagues or managers ("the host") may question your lack of engagement or criticize your decision to leave, but you must prioritize your long-term career health and personal integrity over short-term gains or approval.

For Financial Matters

This line serves as an early warning regarding an investment or financial venture. You sense that conditions are about to turn unfavorable. The correct action is to divest and withdraw your capital, even if it means accepting a small loss or forgoing a slim chance of future profit. This is a "principled retreat" to protect your assets from a greater, impending downturn. Others, perhaps your financial advisor or fellow investors ("the host"), may have "words," criticizing you for being too cautious or for selling too early. Enduring a period of austerity or lower returns ("three days without eating") is far better than being caught in the full "darkening" of a market collapse. Protect what you have by acting decisively now.
