Interpretation

This line represents a pivotal moment in the act of retreat. The "Nine in the fourth place" is a strong yang line, positioned at the beginning of the upper trigram, Heaven (☰). It is free from entanglement with the advancing yin lines below and is close to the ruling fifth line. This position grants it clarity, strength, and the freedom to act decisively. The term "good retreat" (好遯, hào dùn) is key. The character 好 (hào) can mean "good," but also "to be fond of" or "to love." This implies a retreat that is not reluctant or forced, but one that is embraced willingly and skillfully as the correct and wisest course of action. The noble person (君子, jūnzǐ) understands that disengaging from a deteriorating or toxic situation is not a sign of weakness but of superior wisdom. They can detach their ego from the situation and make a clean, decisive break. This act preserves their integrity and energy, leading to good fortune (吉, jí). Conversely, the petty person (小人, xiǎorén) is unable to perform such a retreat. They are entangled by their attachments—to their position, their pride, their desire to win, or their material possessions. They cannot let go and are thus stuck in the unfavorable situation, unable to move forward. The commentary highlights a profound effect of this action: when the noble person withdraws, the petty person is denied the conflict or engagement they thrive on, and thus their influence is blocked or nullified (否, fǒu).

Guidance for Action

This line advises you to make a clean and decisive break from a situation that is draining your energy or compromising your principles. This is not a moment for hesitation or sentimentality. Your ability to detach emotionally and act with clear-headed wisdom is your greatest asset. Recognize that engaging further in a negative dynamic is a losing proposition. The retreat should be voluntary and graceful, not a panicked flight. By withdrawing, you not only save yourself but you also starve the negative elements of the attention they need to survive. Trust your judgment to pull back now, even if others see it as quitting. Your long-term well-being depends on this strategic disengagement.

For Love & Relationships

In the context of love and relationships, this line points to a situation where a relationship dynamic has become unproductive or toxic. It is time for a "good retreat." This may mean ending the relationship altogether if it is fundamentally unhealthy. More subtly, it could mean decisively withdrawing from a specific, recurring pattern of conflict. For example, if you are always drawn into the same pointless argument, the wise action is to refuse to engage. You do this not with anger, but with calm detachment. The "noble" approach is to step back to preserve your emotional health. A "petty" person would be unable to let go, clinging to the need to be right or to the drama of the conflict, thus perpetuating their own suffering.

For Career & Business

This line signals a clear need to distance yourself from a negative work situation. This could be a toxic colleague, a dead-end project, a company with a failing culture, or a boss who undermines you. The "good retreat" is a strategic move. Instead of fighting a losing battle or getting bogged down in office politics, you wisely and cleanly remove yourself from the situation. This could manifest as requesting a transfer, turning down a problematic assignment, or finding a new job. For the "noble" professional, this is a move to protect their career trajectory and mental health. The "petty" person, attached to status or afraid of change, would remain and suffer, their potential blocked by the negative environment.

For Financial Matters

Regarding financial matters, this line is a strong signal to cut your losses. You are likely involved in an investment, a business venture, or a financial plan that is clearly failing. The "good retreat" is to sell the losing asset or exit the venture decisively, without emotional attachment to the money you might have already lost (the "sunk cost fallacy"). The "noble" investor has the discipline to do this, preserving their capital for better opportunities, which leads to good fortune. The "petty" or amateur investor cannot bring themselves to do this. They hold on, hoping for a turnaround, driven by ego or fear, and ultimately face greater losses. This is the time to be decisive and dispassionate.
