The Line Text

六五,咸其輔頰舌。

The sixth line, yin: Influence in one's jaws, cheeks, and tongue.

The Commentary says: "Influence in the jaws, cheeks, and tongue" means to chatter and flatter.

Interpretation

This top line represents the culmination and, in this case, the degeneration of the theme of Influence. The hexagram's journey of connection began with a subtle impulse in the toes (line 1), moved up through the body, reaching its ideal state in the heart (line 4) and the resolute will (line 5). Now, at the very top, the influence has moved to the most superficial part of the body: the mouth. This signifies an influence that is no longer based on genuine feeling, inner truth, or silent understanding, but has devolved into mere words. It is the influence of persuasion, flattery, gossip, or incessant chatter. The connection is no longer felt; it is only talked about. This kind of influence is hollow and lacks real power. It creates no lasting bond and is ultimately ineffective, as it is all surface and no substance. It warns that relying on rhetoric alone, without the backing of sincere intention and action, will lead to nothing of value.

Guidance for Action

Your current approach to influencing others or a situation has become superficial. You may be talking too much, trying to persuade with clever arguments, or engaging in idle gossip. This is a time to stop talking and start listening—both to others and to your own inner truth. Words are cheap and will not achieve your goal. Instead, reconnect with your genuine feelings and intentions. Let your actions, rather than your words, demonstrate your position. If you are trying to convince someone, a quiet, sincere presence will be far more effective than a torrent of words. Be wary of those who try to sway you with flattery or fast talk; look for the substance behind their claims. This line is a strong call for quiet authenticity over noisy persuasion.

For Love & Relationships

In a relationship, this line points to a breakdown of genuine connection, replaced by endless talking, bickering, or empty sweet talk. The deep, non-verbal understanding that once existed may be gone, and now you are both just going through the motions with words. One or both partners might be trying to "win" arguments or talk their way out of problems instead of truly connecting. If you are single, this line warns against trying to win someone over with clever lines or excessive flattery. This approach will be seen as shallow. The guidance is to stop talking *about* the relationship and start living it. Re-establish intimacy through shared experiences, quiet presence, and sincere actions, not words.

For Career & Business

This line signifies a situation dominated by office politics, gossip, and hollow promises. Your influence, or that of others, is based on talk rather than on solid performance. You might be tempted to talk your way into a promotion or out of a difficult situation, but this strategy will ultimately fail. Your credibility may be at risk if you are perceived as all talk and no action. Avoid getting drawn into workplace gossip or making grand pronouncements you cannot back up. Focus on delivering tangible results and let your work speak for itself. Be skeptical of colleagues who are masters of persuasion but lack a track record of achievement. True influence comes from competence and integrity, not from a glib tongue.

For Financial Matters

This line is a major red flag regarding financial matters. It points to decisions being made based on rumors, "hot tips," slick sales pitches, and persuasive talk rather than on solid data and due diligence. You may be tempted by a get-rich-quick scheme that sounds too good to be true—and it almost certainly is. This is not the time to be swayed by a charismatic broker or a friend's enthusiastic but unsubstantiated advice. The influence is superficial and dangerous. The guidance is to be extremely cautious and to ignore the noise. Do your own thorough research. Trust numbers and facts, not narratives and promises. Avoid discussing your financial plans widely; act quietly and deliberately based on a sound, well-researched strategy.
