Hexagram 31, Line 2
Influence (咸)
六二
The Line Text
六二,咸其腓,凶,居吉。
The second line, yin: Influence in the calves. Misfortune. To remain still brings good fortune.
The Commentary says: Although it is misfortune, good fortune comes from staying put. By being receptive and following, one will not be harmed.
Interpretation
This line describes an influence that is felt as a restless urge to move, symbolized by the calves of the legs. The calves twitch and are ready for action, but they do not initiate or direct movement themselves; they only follow the will of the mind. To act on this premature, undirected impulse is to jump the gun. This restless energy, if followed, leads to misfortune because the action is not grounded in a clear purpose or a proper understanding of the situation. It is a response to a superficial stimulus rather than a deep, authentic connection. The true wisdom of this line lies in recognizing this restlessness for what it is and choosing stillness. By "staying put" (居), one exercises self-control and allows the situation to develop. This is not a passive or stubborn stillness, but a receptive one. By waiting patiently, you allow the correct impulse from the proper source (symbolized by the corresponding line 5) to guide you, thus avoiding harm and aligning yourself with a more auspicious outcome.
Guidance for Action
You are feeling a strong pull to act, to follow an impulse, or to chase after something or someone. This feeling is creating a sense of restless energy within you. The I Ching's advice is unequivocal: do not move. Acting now would be a mistake, born of impatience rather than wisdom. This is a critical moment to practice self-discipline and restraint. Acknowledge the urge but do not obey it. Instead, remain in your current position and observe. Let others make the first move. By waiting patiently, you allow clarity to emerge and prevent yourself from making a premature commitment that you might later regret. Your power right now lies in your stillness.
For Love & Relationships
In matters of love and relationships, this line warns against acting on a restless, perhaps fleeting, attraction. You may feel a strong urge to pursue someone, make a bold declaration, or push a developing connection forward. To do so now would be a misstep, likely appearing desperate or overwhelming. It suggests the attraction is not yet deep enough to warrant such action. The best course is to be still. Do not chase. Let your presence be calm and receptive. If you are in an established relationship, this line points to a restless dissatisfaction that could lead you to make impulsive demands or create unnecessary conflict. Hold back. Wait for a better time to address issues. Patience will allow a more genuine and stable connection to unfold.
For Career & Business
You may be feeling a strong temptation to make a move in your career—to jump at a new job offer, launch a project impulsively, or follow a new business trend. This line indicates that such a move would be premature and ill-advised. Your ambition is restless, like a twitching muscle, but it lacks a clear, strategic direction. Acting on this impulse will likely lead to a setback. The correct strategy is to remain in your current position and exercise patience. Focus on performing your present duties with excellence and observe how the landscape develops. Your stability and refusal to be swayed by every passing opportunity will ultimately be recognized and lead to greater, more solid fortune than any rash action.
For Financial Matters
This line is a strong warning against impulsive financial decisions driven by market hype or a fear of missing out (FOMO). You may feel a powerful urge to buy a "hot" stock, sell an asset quickly, or jump into a speculative venture. This is the financial equivalent of a "twitch in the calves" – a restless urge without a sound basis. Acting on this feeling is highly likely to result in financial loss. The guidance is to stay put. Do not make any sudden moves. Stick to your long-term financial plan and resist the temptation to chase quick profits. Your best strategy is to hold your position, remain calm amidst market volatility, and wait for a truly sound and well-vetted opportunity to present itself. Patience is your most valuable asset right now.
