I Ching 22.1 - Grace, Line 1

Hexagram 22, Line 1

Grace (贲)

Hexagram Symbol

初九

The Line Text

初九,賁其趾,舍車而徒。

The first nine: He graces his feet, leaves the carriage, and walks on foot.

The Commentary says: "He leaves the carriage and walks on foot," because according to what is right, he ought not to ride.

Interpretation

This line, at the very beginning of the Hexagram of Grace, depicts a situation of fundamental choice and integrity. The subject is in a lowly position, symbolized by the "feet" or "toes." The "grace" or "adornment" is applied here, at the most basic level. This is not about grand, ostentatious display but about attending to the fundamentals with care. The central action is the conscious decision to "leave the carriage and walk." The carriage represents external aids, status, convenience, or unearned privilege. To reject it is to choose the path of humility, self-reliance, and personal effort. The commentary clarifies this is not a choice born of necessity, but of principle: "it is right not to ride." The individual recognizes that to accept the easy ride would be inappropriate for their current stage of development or position. True grace, at this initial stage, is found not in external trappings but in the moral correctness and authenticity of walking one's own path, relying on one's own strength, and building a solid foundation from the ground up.

Guidance for Action

This is a time to focus on the basics and proceed with humility and integrity. Do not seek or accept shortcuts, unearned advantages, or positions of influence that you have not yet earned. Rely on your own efforts and abilities, even if the path seems slower or more arduous. The true beauty of your situation lies in your commitment to doing things correctly and building from a solid, honest foundation. Take pride in your own work, however humble. Walk your own path with dignity; your strength of character is your greatest asset right now. Avoid the temptation to put on a show or depend on others to carry you.

For Love & Relationships

In matters of love and relationships, this line advises against relying on superficial attractions or external status to win someone's affection. The "carriage" can represent wealth, impressive gestures, or a fancy lifestyle used to attract a partner. The guidance here is to "leave the carriage" and "walk" – to show your true self and build a connection based on genuine character, shared values, and personal effort. The "grace of the feet" suggests taking care of yourself and being presentable, but in a simple, authentic way that reflects self-respect rather than a desire to show off. Build the relationship step-by-step, through honest communication and shared experiences. A bond forged through authenticity will be far stronger than one built on pretense.

For Career & Business

In your professional life, this line indicates you are at a foundational stage. It is crucial to master the basic skills of your trade and not try to leapfrog into a position of authority. "Leaving the carriage" means refusing to rely on nepotism, office politics, or taking credit for others' work. Instead, "walk on foot" by doing the groundwork yourself. Be diligent, reliable, and prove your worth through hands-on competence. Your "grace" is in the quality of your fundamental work and your professional integrity. Embrace an apprentice mindset, be willing to learn from the bottom up, and earn your progress through merit. This humble, dedicated approach will build a strong and respectable career foundation.

For Financial Matters

This line counsels a path of financial prudence and self-reliance. "Leaving the carriage" is a clear warning against taking on unnecessary debt, using excessive leverage, or relying on get-rich-quick schemes to advance your financial standing. The proper course is to "walk on foot"—that is, to live within your means, save diligently, and build wealth through your own hard work and steady effort. The "grace of the feet" suggests that it is perfectly fine to enjoy small, affordable comforts earned through your own labor, but avoid the trap of funding a lavish lifestyle with money you don't have. Focus on building a solid, debt-free financial base. Your security will come from your own discipline and integrity, not from risky shortcuts.
