Hexagram 19, Line 3

Approach (临)

Hexagram Symbol

六三:甘臨

The Line Text

六三:甘臨,无攸利。既憂之,无咎。

Sweet approach. Nothing is gained. If one becomes concerned about it, no blame.

The Commentary says: "Sweet approach" means the position is not appropriate. "If one becomes concerned about it," the fault does not last.

Interpretation

This line, a yin line in a strong yang position, signifies a situation of imbalance and inappropriateness within the otherwise positive time of "Approach." It warns against an approach based on ease, pleasure, or flattery—a "sweet approach." This could manifest as associating with agreeable but unhelpful people, choosing a path of least resistance, or being seduced by superficial comforts. Such an approach, while pleasant in the short term, is ultimately unproductive and leads nowhere beneficial ("Nothing is gained"). The line is at the peak of the lower trigram of Joy (兌), amplifying the temptation to indulge and be complacent. However, the line contains its own remedy. The saving grace is the dawning realization that something is wrong. By becoming concerned and feeling a healthy sense of anxiety about the situation's lack of substance, one can pivot. This self-awareness and subsequent course correction prevent any lasting damage, hence "no blame." The mistake is in the indulgence, but the wisdom is in recognizing it and pulling back.

Guidance for Action

Be cautious of situations, people, or opportunities that seem too easy or too good to be true. Scrutinize offers and relationships that rely heavily on charm and flattery rather than substance and integrity. This is a time to avoid shortcuts and complacency. If you find yourself in a comfortable but stagnant situation, allow yourself to feel a sense of unease about it. This "worry" is not a negative emotion but a helpful signal from your intuition that a change is needed. Acknowledge that you may have been led astray by the pursuit of pleasure or ease. Once you recognize this, act to correct your course. Your ability to see the danger and change direction is the key to avoiding significant problems. True, lasting progress requires diligence and a clear-eyed view of reality, not just sweet talk and comfort.

For Love & Relationships

This line points to a relationship founded on superficial attraction, sweet words, and easy fun, but lacking in genuine depth and long-term potential. You may be enjoying a "honeymoon phase" that masks underlying incompatibilities, or you might be involved with someone who is charming but not truly invested in the relationship's growth. The connection feels good, but it isn't leading anywhere meaningful. The guidance here is to "become concerned." It is time to look past the pleasantries and ask if the relationship has a solid foundation. Are you and your partner truly good for each other? Are you building a future or just passing time pleasantly? By acknowledging the potential emptiness of the situation, you can either work to build a more substantial connection or decide to move on without incurring deep emotional damage or regret ("no blame").

For Career & Business

In a professional context, this line warns against complacency and being seduced by the perks of a job rather than its substance. You might be in a comfortable role with pleasant colleagues, but you are not being challenged or growing professionally. This could also represent a project that seems easy and prestigious but is actually a dead end, or being swayed by a charismatic but ineffective manager. This "sweet approach" to your career leads to stagnation. The crucial step is to recognize this lack of progress and feel concerned. This awakening allows you to seek out more meaningful challenges, acquire new skills, or look for a position that offers real growth. Taking corrective action now, even if it means leaving a comfortable situation, will prevent future regret and career blame.

For Financial Matters

This line is a strong warning against get-rich-quick schemes, speculative investments that promise effortless returns, or any financial deal that relies on "sweet talk." It cautions against a careless approach to money, such as overspending on luxuries and pleasures that provide immediate gratification but drain your resources without building lasting wealth. This path is unsustainable and ultimately unprofitable. The moment of salvation comes when you begin to worry about this behavior. That feeling of unease is a critical signal to stop. Heed the warning, pull back from high-risk ventures, curb frivolous spending, and return to a more disciplined and sound financial strategy. By recognizing the folly of the "sweet deal" and correcting your course, you will avoid significant financial loss.
