六二:包承。小人吉
The Line Text
六二:包承。小人吉,大人否亨。
Enduring and serving. For the small person, good fortune. For the great person, standstill; this leads to success.
The Commentary says: "The great person endures the standstill" because they do not confuse themselves with the crowd.
Interpretation
This line describes a situation deep within a period of stagnation and decline. The forces of Heaven and Earth are disconnected, and society's values are inverted. In such a time, those who operate from a place of self-interest, opportunism, and short-term gain (the "small person") find it easy to thrive. They adapt to the corrupt environment and find good fortune by going along with it. For the "great person"—one who holds to higher principles, integrity, and a long-term vision—this environment is hostile. To engage with it on its own terms would mean compromising one's values and getting dragged down into the muck. Therefore, the only correct and ultimately successful path is to accept the standstill. The "success" (亨, hēng) mentioned here is not worldly achievement but the preservation of one's character and inner truth. It is the success of non-action, of patiently enduring the difficult circumstances without being corrupted by them. By "enduring and serving" (包承, bāo chéng), the great person bears the situation, stays in their place, and avoids mixing with the prevailing negative influences, thereby protecting their inner strength for a better time.
Guidance for Action
You are currently in a situation where negative, unproductive, or unprincipled influences are dominant. Trying to fight this head-on or push your own agenda will be fruitless and likely lead to your own downfall. The wisdom of this line is strategic retreat and patient endurance. Do not be tempted by the apparent success of those who are cutting corners or acting without integrity. Their "good fortune" is temporary and built on a weak foundation. Your task is to hold fast to your principles. Withdraw your energy from the conflict. Do what is required of you, but do not become emotionally entangled in the surrounding drama or dysfunction. This is a time to be inwardly strong and outwardly compliant. By refusing to engage in the negativity, you preserve your resources, your energy, and your integrity. This patient waiting is not a sign of weakness but of profound strength and foresight. Wait for the tide to turn, as it inevitably will.
For Love & Relationships
In a relationship, this line points to a period of serious disconnect and misunderstanding. Communication has broken down, and you may feel that your partner is operating from a selfish or petty place, while your own higher intentions are being ignored. It may seem that your partner is "winning" arguments or getting their way, but this is the "good fortune of the small person"—a short-term victory that damages the relationship's core. To engage in tit-for-tat arguments or to try and force your view will only deepen the standstill. The wise path is to endure this phase with patience. Create some emotional space for yourself. Do not compromise your core values about how a relationship should function, but also do not try to force change right now. By remaining calm and centered, you protect yourself from further hurt and allow the situation to unfold without adding more conflict.
For Career & Business
Your work environment is likely toxic, stagnant, or mismanaged. People who engage in office politics, flattery, or unethical behavior may be getting ahead, while your own principled, hard work goes unrecognized. It is a frustrating time where your best efforts seem to meet a wall of indifference or opposition. The guidance is clear: do not join them. Do not compromise your standards to get ahead in this environment. Fulfilling your basic duties ("serving") while patiently bearing the situation ("enduring") is your key to success. Your success is not a promotion right now, but the preservation of your professional reputation and self-respect. Use this time to observe, plan, and perhaps look for opportunities elsewhere, but avoid making any overt, confrontational moves.
For Financial Matters
The current financial climate may be irrational or favor speculative, high-risk ventures. You may see others making quick profits on flimsy investments, which can be tempting. This is the "good fortune of the small person." This line warns you against joining this frenzy. For the prudent investor (the "great person"), this is a time for capital preservation, not aggressive action. Stick to your sound, long-term financial principles. Endure the market stagnation or volatility without panic. Your success is not in chasing quick gains, but in avoiding significant losses and protecting your assets. Hold your position, be patient, and wait for a more stable and rational environment before making significant new investments.
