Interpretation
This line is one of the most auspicious in the entire I Ching. It sits in the fifth, or "ruler's," position of Hexagram 11, which is itself a time of great harmony and prosperity (Peace). The image is of Emperor Yi, a historical ruler of the Shang Dynasty, who gave his daughter in marriage to a vassal of a lower state. This was an act of profound humility, grace, and strategic wisdom. Instead of using his superior power to dominate, he chose to form a bond of kinship, condescending (in the original, positive sense of the word) to bridge the gap between high and low. This yin line in a strong yang position perfectly embodies this principle: power tempered with gentleness, authority expressed through receptivity and connection. This action ensures the continuation of the era of Peace. It is not a passive waiting, but an active, humble engagement with those below that cements good fortune and allows one's highest aspirations to be realized. The result is not just good fortune, but "supreme good fortune" (元吉, yuán jí), indicating a foundational and lasting success.
Guidance for Action
You are currently in a position of influence, strength, or advantage. The key to achieving the best possible outcome is to act with humility and grace. Do not be arrogant or stand on ceremony. Instead, reach down and build bridges with those in a "lower" or less advantaged position. Share your resources, knowledge, or status generously. By forming alliances and showing respect to others, you will not diminish your own standing; on the contrary, you will secure it and create a situation of mutual benefit and widespread harmony. Your willingness to be approachable and to connect on a human level will be the very action that brings about supreme success and allows your plans to unfold perfectly. Set aside your ego and lead with generosity.
For Love & Relationships
This is an exceptionally positive line for relationships. It often points toward a blessed union, such as an engagement or marriage. The dynamic it describes is one where partners bridge any differences in background, status, or temperament with grace and humility. If one partner is in a "stronger" position (e.g., more emotionally stable, financially secure), they should take the lead in being generous and understanding, creating a safe and loving space for the union to flourish. This is not about power imbalance, but about the beautiful act of two people willingly coming together in a spirit of mutual respect and devotion. A relationship founded on these principles is destined for profound happiness and lasting good fortune.
For Career & Business
In your career, this line indicates that you hold a position of authority or seniority. Your greatest success will come not from issuing commands, but from mentorship, collaboration, and empowering your team. Be the leader who shares credit, listens to the ideas of junior members, and actively fosters a cooperative environment. By forming strategic alliances and graciously connecting with colleagues at all levels, you will earn immense loyalty and respect. This approach will ensure your projects are not just successful, but brilliantly so, bringing "supreme good fortune" to you and your organization. Your influence will grow exponentially through this humble and connective style of leadership.
For Financial Matters
This line suggests you are in a position of financial stability or abundance. The wisest course of action now is not to hoard your resources, but to use them strategically to create partnerships and opportunities. This could manifest as investing in a promising smaller company, forming a joint venture, or even being generous through philanthropy or helping a family member start a business. By using your financial strength to "give in marriage"—that is, to form a beneficial union with a party of lesser means—you create a dynamic of shared growth. This strategic generosity and partnership will lead to returns that are not only profitable but also stable and fortunate in the long run.
