Hexagram 11, Line 4
Peace (泰)
九四:翩翩不富
The Line Text
九四:翩翩不富,以其鄰,不戒以孚。
Fourth yin: Fluttering down, not by virtue of wealth, together with one's neighbors, sincere and without need for warning.
The Commentary says: "Fluttering down, not by virtue of wealth," means that all have become empty of substance. "Sincere and without need for warning," means it is the heart's central wish.
Interpretation
This line marks a pivotal moment within the harmonious state of Peace. As the first line of the upper trigram, Earth (Kūn), it represents someone in a position of influence or authority. The image is of birds "fluttering down" from a height. This is a voluntary, graceful descent. The person in this position does not rely on their status, power, or resources ("not by virtue of wealth") to connect with those below them (the strong yang lines of the Heaven trigram). Instead, they act in concert with their peers ("with one's neighbors," the other yin lines) to humbly and openly engage with the creative energy rising from below. This connection is based on profound trust and shared purpose ("sincere and without need for warning"). There is no need for commands, formal rules, or defensive measures because the sincerity is mutual and comes from the core of everyone's being. The commentary's phrase "all have become empty of substance" means that those in authority have let go of their ego, pride, and attachment to their status. They have made themselves receptive and open, which allows for this perfect, spontaneous communion. This is the central, heartfelt desire of everyone involved in maintaining this time of prosperity.
Guidance for Action
Your current position or status is not the source of your true influence. To maintain harmony and progress, you must consciously and humbly connect with those who may be in "lower" positions but possess great energy and talent. Let go of any pretense or need to command respect through authority. Instead, be approachable, open, and sincere. Your power now lies in your ability to build trust and foster collaboration. Engage with your colleagues and team members as equals. Share information freely and act from a place of genuine, shared interest. This natural, unforced sincerity will create a powerful bond that accomplishes far more than any directive or show of force could. This is a time for confident humility.
For Love & Relationships
In a relationship, this line indicates a beautiful opportunity for deepening your connection through vulnerability and equality. If there is any kind of imbalance—whether in emotional expression, social standing, or financial status—this is the time for the person in the "higher" position to "flutter down." This means setting aside pride or defensiveness and opening your heart sincerely. Communication should be spontaneous and genuine, not a calculated move. The connection thrives on mutual trust that needs no formal "warnings" or reassurances. It's about showing up as you are, with an open heart, and trusting your partner to do the same. This is the foundation for a truly peaceful and harmonious partnership where both individuals feel seen, valued, and safe.
For Career & Business
This is a powerful line for anyone in a leadership or management role. Your success, and that of your team, depends on your ability to bridge the gap between management and employees. Do not rely on your job title to get things done. Instead, practice "management by walking around." Engage directly with your team, listen to their ideas, and show genuine interest in their work. Create an environment of psychological safety where trust is implicit. When you act with this kind of sincerity, you empower the creative and productive energy of your team (the yang lines below) to rise and flourish. Your role is not to command, but to facilitate and connect. This collaborative spirit is the "heart's central wish" and will lead to exceptional results and high morale.
For Financial Matters
This line advises against hoarding resources or acting solely from a position of financial strength. Prosperity at this time is increased through circulation, collaboration, and community-building, not through isolated accumulation. "Not by virtue of wealth" is a direct instruction: your money alone won't solve the problem or create the best opportunity. Instead, connect with partners, invest in community ventures, or form alliances. Your greatest asset is the trust you build within your network. Act with sincerity and transparency in all your dealings. Shared opportunities and mutual support will yield far greater returns than trying to maintain an advantage by keeping your cards close to your chest. Your financial well-being is tied to the well-being of your "neighbors."
