The Line Text

初九,拔茅茹,以其彙,征吉。

Nine at the beginning: When pulling up reeds, the sod comes with them. Advancing with your own kind brings good fortune.

The Commentary says: The Commentary says: The good fortune of advancing when pulling up the reeds comes because the will is directed outward.

Interpretation

This line marks the very beginning of the auspicious time of Peace (Tài). It is the first active, creative (yang) force beginning its ascent. The central image is of uprooting reeds (or cogon grass), which have deeply intertwined root systems. When you pull one stalk, a whole clump comes with it. This powerfully illustrates the principle of interconnectedness and an auspicious start. This line signifies that you are not acting alone. Your initiative is connected to others of a similar mind and purpose, just as the first yang line is connected to the other two yang lines of the Heaven trigram below. The Commentary reinforces this by stating the "will is directed outward," meaning your ambition is not insular or selfish but is focused on engaging with the world, connecting with others, and contributing to a larger, harmonious movement. This is a time of burgeoning potential, where a single, well-placed effort can set a much larger, positive chain of events in motion.

Guidance for Action

The message is clear: now is the time to act. Your initial steps toward a new goal or project are highly favored. However, do not proceed in isolation. Identify your allies, your team, and those who share your vision and values. Your strength lies in this collective unity. Assemble your "clump" and move forward together. This is a call to take the initiative in a new venture, knowing that your efforts will attract the right people and resources. Your personal aspirations should align with a broader, communal benefit. Embrace collaboration and be the catalyst that sets a positive, collective movement into motion.

For Love & Relationships

For those seeking a relationship, this line is an excellent omen. It suggests that you will meet someone with whom you share a deep connection of values, background, and life goals—you are "of the same kind." This connection may also bring you into a warm and welcoming circle of their friends and family. For those in an existing relationship, this is the time to take a significant step forward together, such as moving in, getting engaged, or starting a family. The key is to advance together ("征吉," advancing is auspicious). Your shared initiative will be blessed with good fortune and will strengthen the roots of your partnership.

For Career & Business

This is an exceptionally positive line for career matters. It signals a perfect time to launch a new project, start a new business, or accept a new role. Your success will be magnified by teamwork. The "reeds" metaphor advises you to build a strong, cohesive team of like-minded individuals. If you are a leader, bring your trusted colleagues with you. If you are starting a new job, you will quickly find your place among supportive peers. Your ambition is "directed outward," so networking, presenting your ideas, and actively pursuing opportunities will yield great results. An initiative you start now has the potential to grow successfully, pulling other positive developments along with it.

For Financial Matters

This line indicates a favorable time for new financial undertakings. An initial investment made now can act as the "reed" that pulls up a whole "clump" of future gains. Consider this a time to plant financial seeds. This could mean starting a new investment portfolio, launching a business venture, or beginning a new savings plan. The principle of "advancing with your own kind" suggests that joint ventures with trusted partners or seeking advice from a group of like-minded investors could be particularly fruitful. Your proactive steps to manage and grow your wealth will be met with success. Don't hesitate; the moment to advance is now.
