Hexagram Symbol

九五:夬履

The Line Text

九五:夬履,貞厲。

The fifth nine: Treading resolutely. Perseverance with an awareness of danger.

The Commentary says: "Treading resolutely; perseverance with danger": The position is correct and appropriate.

Interpretation

This line, the ruler of the hexagram, signifies being in a position of great influence and responsibility. The "treading" here is "resolute" (夬, kuài), indicating that a firm, decisive course of action is required. You are in the right, and your position is correct, but this does not grant you immunity from risk. On the contrary, the phrase "perseverance with an awareness of danger" (貞厲) highlights a central paradox of leadership: the very act of making correct and necessary decisions places you in a precarious situation. Your actions have significant consequences, and you must proceed with full consciousness of the potential perils. The danger is not a sign that you are on the wrong path; rather, it is an intrinsic element of the right path for someone in your position. It is a call to act with conviction, but without arrogance or naivete, keeping your eyes open to the challenges that your own correct conduct will inevitably stir up.

Guidance for Action

You are at a critical juncture where decisive action is needed. Do not hesitate or waver. Trust your judgment and proceed with the conviction that your course is the correct one. However, you must simultaneously maintain a high level of vigilance. Acknowledge the risks and potential backlash that your decisions may create. This is not a time for blind optimism. Your strength lies in your ability to move forward resolutely while being fully prepared for the difficulties ahead. The danger is a test of your character and resolve. Hold fast to your principles, act with integrity, and be prepared to navigate the consequences of your choices with wisdom and courage.

For Love & Relationships

In a relationship, this line points to a moment that demands a firm and clear decision. You may need to define the relationship, make a serious commitment, or address a long-standing issue with uncompromising honesty. This "resolute treading" is the correct path for your own integrity and the potential health of the relationship. However, be prepared for emotional danger. Your decisiveness could lead to conflict, hurt feelings, or even the end of the partnership. The I Ching advises that even if the action is correct, the outcome is not guaranteed to be smooth or painless. You must act from your principles, aware that doing the right thing can be a difficult and risky undertaking.

For Career & Business

You are in a position of leadership or facing a pivotal career decision. This is the time to execute a bold strategy, launch a major initiative, or make a necessary but difficult organizational change. Your analysis is sound and your position is strong. However, proceeding with this correct course of action will place you in a dangerous position. Competitors may react fiercely, you may face internal resistance, or the market could prove volatile. The warning of "danger" is a reminder to be a savvy leader—act with confidence and determination, but also anticipate challenges, manage risks, and have contingency plans. Your leadership is defined by your ability to navigate these inherent perils successfully.

For Financial Matters

This line indicates a moment for a major financial move, such as a significant investment, the sale of a core asset, or a fundamental shift in your financial strategy. You have done your research and are convinced that your plan is sound. Move forward with this decision resolutely. However, the I Ching cautions that even the most correct and well-planned financial action carries inherent risk. The market is unpredictable, and unforeseen events can occur. Therefore, proceed with your plan but without complacency. Acknowledge the potential for loss and remain vigilant. This is about taking a calculated risk with your eyes wide open, not about being reckless. Your success depends on acting decisively while respecting the ever-present element of danger.
