Interpretation

This is the final line of the hexagram of pure creative power. It represents the absolute zenith, the extreme limit of Yang energy. The dragon, the symbol of this power, has flown not just to the heavens (Line 5) but beyond them. It has ascended so high that it has lost touch with the earth, with reality, and with any form of support. This position of "亢" (kàng) signifies arrogance, extremity, and over-reaching. While the dragon is at the peak of its power, this very height makes it isolated and vulnerable. The energy has gone too far and has nowhere else to go but to reverse. Therefore, a fall is inevitable, leading to "悔" (huǐ) – regret, remorse, and sorrow. This line is a profound warning that any state of extremity is unsustainable. Pushing ambition and power beyond their natural limits leads not to greater glory, but to isolation and an eventual, painful decline. It marks the moment when supreme achievement tips over into hubris.

Guidance for Action

Your current situation has reached a peak. Any further attempt to push forward, expand your influence, or assert your will is likely to lead to negative consequences. This is a time for humility, not ambition. Recognize the limits of your power and the dangers of arrogance. Do not initiate new, aggressive actions. Instead, consider a strategic retreat, consolidating what you have already achieved. It is wiser to step down gracefully from a high position than to be brought down. Let go of the need for absolute control. Be aware that your success may have made you isolated; reconnect with your foundations and with those who support you. The wisest action now is to stop, reflect, and prepare for the inevitable change in the cycle.

For Love & Relationships

In the context of love and relationships, this line warns of a dynamic that has become extreme. This could manifest as one partner being overly dominant, controlling, or egotistical, leading to the isolation of both individuals. It can also signify a relationship that has reached a peak of intensity that is no longer sustainable and is on the verge of burning out. If you are single, this line may point to an attitude of having impossibly high standards or an arrogance that prevents you from forming a genuine connection. The guidance is to pull back from conflict, cease trying to "win" arguments, and let go of the need to be right. If a relationship has run its course, clinging to it out of pride will only lead to greater pain and regret. Humility and a willingness to compromise or step back are essential to avoid a crash.

For Career & Business

This line represents the pinnacle of a career, but one that has gone too far. It could be the CEO who refuses to retire, the leader who becomes a dictator, or the visionary who loses touch with the practical realities of their company. You may be in a position of great authority, but you are isolated from your team and your actions are seen as arrogant. Pushing for more growth, a more aggressive takeover, or another ambitious project now is ill-advised. Your reputation is at risk. The best course of action is to secure your legacy, mentor a successor, and consider a graceful exit or a transition to an advisory role. Clinging to power will tarnish your achievements and lead to a fall from grace.

For Financial Matters

This line is a classic warning sign of a market bubble at its absolute peak. It signifies irrational exuberance and the belief that an asset can only go up. The "arrogant dragon" is the investor who holds on, greedy for every last cent of profit, ignoring all signs that the market is overextended. This is a strong and urgent signal to sell, take profits, and move your assets to a place of safety. Do not get caught up in the hype or the fear of missing out. The regret that follows will be significant when the inevitable correction or crash occurs. The time for aggressive accumulation is over. The time for capital preservation is now. Liquidate speculative positions and do not take on new risks.
