I Ching 33.1 - Retreat, Line 1

Hexagram 33, Line 1

Retreat (遁)

Hexagram Symbol

初六:遯尾

The Line Text

初六:遯尾,厲,勿用有攸往。

Six at the beginning: At the tail of the retreat. This is dangerous. It is not favorable to go anywhere.

The Commentary says: The "danger of the tail of the retreat": By not going forward, what misfortune can there be?

Interpretation

This line, being the first and lowest, represents the very beginning of the retreat. It is in the most vulnerable position, at the "tail" of the withdrawing party, closest to the advancing, unfavorable forces. The danger (厲) is immediate and palpable. You are the rearguard, and the risk of being caught, entangled, or cut off is high. Any attempt to advance, launch a new initiative, or even hesitate ("go anywhere") will lead to trouble. You are too close to the source of the problem to act freely. The situation is precarious, and your primary focus must be on disengagement. The commentary offers the key to survival: the danger exists only if you try to move forward or undertake something new. By remaining still and refusing to advance, you avoid calamity. It is a call for absolute caution and the cessation of all forward movement to ensure a safe withdrawal.

Guidance for Action

You are in a vulnerable position at the very outset of a difficult situation that requires you to pull back. Recognize that you are too close to a negative influence or a failing enterprise to effect any positive change right now. Your priority is self-preservation. Halt all new plans and initiatives immediately. Do not try to be a hero or fix the problem; this will only entangle you further. The wisest course of action is to stop, become still, and quietly create distance. Let the situation unfold without your active participation. Your safety lies in inaction and a swift, unceremonious disengagement from the source of the trouble.

For Love & Relationships

This line points to a relationship that is becoming unhealthy or a dynamic that is turning negative. You are just beginning to realize the need to step back, but you are still deeply enmeshed. The danger lies in trying to have "one last talk," seeking dramatic closure, or attempting to change the other person. These actions will only draw you deeper into the conflict and emotional turmoil. The correct action is to cease all engagement. Stop initiating contact, do not respond to provocations, and create quiet distance. This is not the time for negotiation; it is the time for a clean, non-confrontational retreat to protect your emotional well-being. If you are just starting a new relationship and receive this line, it is a major red flag warning you to stop immediately before you get hurt.

For Career & Business

You find yourself in a precarious position at work. This could be a failing project, a toxic team environment, or a department facing downsizing. You are "at the tail," meaning you are one of the most exposed or the last to be able to get out safely. Trying to launch a new project, take on more responsibility to "save the day," or make a bold move will backfire, likely making you a scapegoat. The guidance is clear: stop what you are doing. Fulfill your basic duties, but do not commit to anything new. Do not draw attention to yourself. Quietly assess your options for a transfer or a new job. Your goal is to detach from the failing situation without being pulled down with it.

For Financial Matters

This line serves as a strong warning regarding a specific investment or financial venture. You are holding a position that is in immediate danger. It is "at the tail" of a downturn, meaning it is highly vulnerable to further losses. The temptation might be to "double down" or invest more, hoping for a rebound, but the I Ching advises strongly against this. Any further action or investment ("going anywhere") is dangerous and will likely lead to greater financial harm. The wisest move is to stop feeding money into this venture. If possible, cut your losses and retreat to a safer financial position (like cash or more stable assets). This is a time for capital preservation, not for risk-taking or trying to outsmart a falling market.
