Welcome, Kua Number 2

If you've calculated your Kua number and found you are a 2, you've unlocked the blueprint of the 'Nurturer' or 'Kun' trigram. This is your starting point for making your environment work for your success.

You are part of the West Group of Kua numbers. Your main energy comes from the Earth element, which stands for stability, care, and strong relationships.

This guide does more than just list facts. We will look at who you really are, find your four lucky and four unlucky directions, and show you how to use this old wisdom in your modern home, job, and relationships to get real results.

The Essence of Kua 2

Your Core Profile

To understand your Kua number, we need to look at its basic traits. Kua Number 2 links directly to the Kun (坤) trigram from the I Ching. This symbol represents the highest form of Yin energy, standing for motherhood, the Earth itself, and the ground that feeds all living things.

Your energy is patient, helpful, and strong. You are the base that others build on, giving the stability they need to grow.

A Foolproof Calculation Guide

Verifying Your Kua Number

To make sure this guide fits you perfectly, you need to check your Kua number. The math is simple but has a few key rules people often miss.

The most important rule is that Feng Shui uses the Chinese Solar Calendar, not our regular calendar. The new year for this purpose almost always starts on February 4th or 5th.

If your birthday is in January or before February 4th, you must use the year before for your math. For example, if you were born on January 20, 1985, you would use the year 1984 to find your Kua number.

Step-by-Step Calculation

Follow these steps if you were born before the year 2000.

  1. Isolate Your Birth Year: Take the last two digits of your birth year. For 1983, you would use 83.
  2. Add the Digits: Add these two digits together. For 1983, this would be 8 + 3 = 11.
  3. Reduce to a Single Digit: If the sum has two digits, add those digits together until you get a single number. In our example, 1 + 1 = 2. This is your base number.
  4. Apply the Gender Formula: This is where males and females take different paths.
    • For Females: Add 5 to your base number. In our example, 2 + 5 = 7. The Kua number for a female born in 1983 is 7. If the result has two digits (like a base number of 6 gives 6+5=11), you must reduce it again (1+1=2).
    • For Males: Subtract your base number from 10. In our example, 10 - 2 = 8. The Kua number for a male born in 1983 is 8.

The Kua Number 5 Case

In the Eight Mansions system, there is no Kua number 5. The middle spot is saved, so if your math gives you a 5, it changes based on your gender.

  • If a male's math results in 5, he is treated as a Kua Number 2.
  • If a female's math results in 5, she is treated as a Kua Number 8.

For Those Born in 2000+

A different rule applies to anyone born in or after the year 2000. The first three steps are the same, but the gender formula changes.

  • For Females: Add 6 to the base number.
  • For Males: Subtract the base number from 9.

Always reduce any two-digit result to a single digit.

Your Auspicious Directions

Activating Your Power Zones

As a Kua 2, you have four personal directions that work well with your energy. Using these directions in your daily life can gently but strongly boost specific areas. This is the heart of practical Ba Zhai Feng Shui.

These directions are not just compass points. They are streams of specific types of good energy. By facing them, you are literally "tuning in" to a wave that supports your goals.

Direction Name (Pinyin) Direction Governs (Your Best Direction For...) How to Activate
Sheng Chi (生氣) Northeast Prosperity & Success: This is your "Wealth" direction. It creates lively, active energy for career growth, recognition, and money success. Face Northeast when you are working, making a deal, or making big business choices. Your office desk should ideally face this way.
Tian Yi (天醫) West Health & Well-being: This is your "Heavenly Doctor" direction. It helps physical healing, energy, and mental peace. It helps you get better when sick and stay healthy. The best use is to place your bed so your head points West while you sleep. You can also face West when taking medicine or meditating for health.
Nian Yan (延年) Northwest Relationships & Love: This is your "Longevity" direction, ruling harmony in all relationships. This includes your romantic partner, family, friends, and work mates. Face Northwest during important family talks or social events. Placing symbols of partnership, like a pair of ducks or a wedding photo, in this part of your home makes it work better.
Fu Wei (伏位) Southwest Personal Growth & Stability: This is your "Stability" direction. It helps mental clarity, focus, and inner peace, making it great for study, meditation, and self-growth. Face Southwest when you are studying, reading, or meditating. Having your main door in the Southwest part of your home brings in stable, grounding energy for the whole house.

From Theory to Reality

A Practical Kua 2 Guide

Knowing your directions is one thing. Using them well in a modern home is another. The key is to make small, steady changes rather than trying to change everything at once.

First, Find Your Directions

Before you can improve, you must map your space. This is easier than it sounds.

Use the compass app on your phone. Stand in the middle of your home or the room you want to check. Hold the phone flat and let the compass settle.

It helps to draw a simple map of your home. From the center point, draw lines out to mark North, South, East, and West, and then the middle directions like Northeast and Southwest. Now you have a basic Bagua map of your own space.

At Home: Room-by-Room

Now, let's use this knowledge in key areas.

In the Living Room, find your main sitting area. If you can, place your favorite chair or the end of the sofa you use most to face one of your good directions. Facing Northeast (Sheng Chi) while you plan your week or read business news can subtly boost your success mindset.

In the Bedroom, your sleep direction is most important. Try to align your bed so that the top of your head points toward your health direction, West (Tian Yi). If the room's layout makes this impossible, your next best options are Northwest (Nian Yan) for relationship harmony or Southwest (Fu Wei) for stable, restful sleep. Avoid your bad directions at all costs.

In the Home Office, the way your desk faces is your main tool for career growth. Your desk must face Northeast (Sheng Chi) if at all possible. This aligns your working energy directly with the flow of success and wealth. If the room's structure forbids this, face Southwest (Fu Wei) for focus and clarity.

At Work: Small Tweaks

You still have control over your energy even in a shared or office space where you cannot move furniture.

Just turning your chair slightly can make a difference. When you are on an important call or writing a key email, turn your chair a few degrees to face Northeast. It's a small, hidden action that aligns your personal energy with the task at hand.

You can also place a small, powerful symbol in the matching direction on your desk. For a Kua 2, a small plant or a piece of pottery in the Northeast corner of your desk can help activate the Sheng Chi energy in your work space.

A Personal Walkthrough

Let's look at a common problem. You've found Northeast as your best direction for work, but your home office is small, and the only place the desk fits is against a wall facing South (a bad direction for you).

Don't worry. Feng Shui is about solutions, not strict rules. Place your desk where it fits. Now, focus on the Northeast corner of the room itself. This corner is your power spot.

Activate it on purpose. Place your vision board here. Add a bright lamp (the Fire element strengthens your Earth element). Place a citrine crystal, known as the "merchant's stone," in this corner to boost wealth energy. Even though you aren't facing the direction, you are activating its energy in your space, and it will still work for you.

Managing Unfavorable Directions

The Other Side of the Coin

Just as you have four good directions, you also have four that don't match your personal energy. It's important to know that these directions are not "evil" or "cursed." They simply carry a type of Qi that can create friction, blocks, or a drain on your energy.

The goal is to limit your exposure to them. You should avoid facing these directions for long periods and, if possible, avoid having important areas like your bedroom, office, or main door located in these parts of your home. If you cannot avoid them, we use the Five Elements to fix and weaken their influence.

Direction Name (Pinyin) Direction Potential Effect (If Activated) How to Remedy / Weaken
Huo Hai (禍害) East This means "Obstacles." It can show up as frequent fights, frustrating setbacks, and minor accidents or legal issues. The East is a Wood direction. To weaken it, use the Metal element, as Metal cuts Wood. Place a metal wind chime, a round metal bowl, or a sculpture made of bronze, steel, or copper in this area.
Wu Gui (五鬼) Southeast The "Five Ghosts" direction is linked to betrayal, backstabbing, gossip, and sudden money losses. It can stir up drama between people. The Southeast is also a Wood direction. The fix here is to use the Fire element. Fire burns Wood, using up its bad energy. Place a lamp that you keep on often, or use red-colored items like cushions or a rug.
Liu Sha (六煞) South The "Six Killings" direction mainly affects relationships, possibly leading to scandals, legal troubles, or messy love affairs. The South is a strong Fire direction. To control this, we use the Water element, as Water puts out Fire. A small, quiet water feature, or objects in black or dark blue, can help calm this energy.
Jue Ming (絕命) North This is your "Total Loss" direction and is the most severe. It can harm health and finances. This is the one direction to avoid at all costs. AVOID sleeping with your head pointing North or having your desk face North. If a bathroom or storage closet is here, the effect is less. The North is a Water direction. As a Kua 2 (Earth), your own element controls Water. To strengthen this control, add more Earth elements (pottery, crystals) or the Metal element (as Metal produces Water, it distracts and drains the bad Qi).

Kua 2 Compatibility

The Dynamics of Relationships

Your Kua number also gives deep insight into your relationships. Compatibility in Feng Shui is not about "good" or "bad" people but about how their basic energies interact. As a Kua 2, your element is Earth.

The Elemental Dance

To understand compatibility, we use the Five Element theory. There are two main cycles:

  • Productive Cycle: This is a supportive, nurturing relationship. Fire produces Earth; Earth produces Metal; Metal produces Water; Water produces Wood; Wood produces Fire.
  • Destructive Cycle: This is a challenging, draining relationship. Wood destroys Earth; Earth destroys Water; Water destroys Fire; Fire destroys Metal; Metal destroys Wood.

Your Best Matches

Your most harmonious relationships will be with people from your own West Group or those whose element supports you.

  • Kua 8 (Earth): This is a highly stable and grounded pairing. You are both Earth elements, so you understand each other naturally. You provide mutual support and create a secure foundation together.
  • Kua 6 & 7 (Metal): This is an excellent productive relationship. In the five elements, Earth produces Metal. This means you naturally nurture and support them, and they find your presence strengthening. It's a very productive and successful dynamic for both personal and work partnerships.
  • Kua 9 (Fire): This is a very lucky and energizing match. In the cycle, Fire produces Earth. A Kua 9 person will naturally energize, inspire, and support you. They bring passion and vitality that strengthens your stable nature.

Your Challenging Pairings

Your most challenging dynamics will be with people from the East Group, whose elements conflict with your Earth element.

  • Kua 1 (Water): This can be a difficult pairing. In the cycle, Earth destroys (or dams) Water. This means you can feel like you are constantly trying to control or contain them, which is draining for you and can feel stifling for them. It requires conscious effort to give each other space.
  • Kua 3 & 4 (Wood): This is the most challenging dynamic for a Kua 2. In the cycle, Wood destroys (or consumes) Earth. A relationship with a Kua 3 or 4 can feel depleting for you, as their energy naturally takes from yours. For this to work, the Kua 2 needs a very strong personal energy and may need to introduce Fire element cures into the environment to balance the interaction (as Fire burns the excess Wood).

Embracing Your Role

The Nurturer's Path

Your identity as a Kua Number 2 is a powerful one. You are the stable, supportive, and caring person whose foundation is the reliable Earth element. You provide the security and consistency that allows others, and yourself, to thrive.

To make this knowledge work for you, focus on these key actions:

  1. Identify your four good directions: Northeast, West, Northwest, and Southwest.
  2. Activate them by consciously orienting your bed, desk, and main seating to face them.
  3. Fix any unavoidable bad directions by using the correct balancing elements.

Your Kua number is not a limit. It is your personal guide. By understanding your natural strengths and the specific energies that support you, you can purposely create an environment that leads to a life of greater harmony, stability, and lasting success.
